Loughborough Pre Season Training - KCS Wimbledon

In August, Tours 4 organised a pre season rugby training camp for Kings College School Wimbledon 1st XV Squad, who had been on a successful tour to South Africa in the summer.

They were keen to get back together as a group and prepare for what is a tough school fixture list, playing the likes of Dulwich College and Brighton College, who we took to Italy this year on a pre season camp.

The group arrived in Loughborough early on Wednesday morning and went straight into a pitch session to stretch the legs after their journey up the M1. After refuelling at lunch they were back on the Towers Rugby Pitch for a two hour session focusing on tactics. After a tiring the day the team tucked into a buffet dinner on campus and relaxed for the evening.
On Thursday morning the boys were looking surprisingly fresh after being worked hard the day before. After breakfast, head coach Neil Roberts briefed the squad on the day ahead which followed a similar pattern to Wednesday with two pitch sessions either side of lunch but also included a welcome swim in the Olympic pool before lunch and was used as a recovery session. Today the backs worked on their moves from lineout and the forwards worked on opposed line-outs with the aim for both groups to focus on speed of thought and action. After dinner, the players got the chance to unwind and the coaches organised a night of ten pin bowling at a venue nearby.
Friday was the last day of the camp and a the team had one session in the morning due to the Reigate tournament on the Saturday. The team worked on decision making and team play and it must be said that the players looked sharp and the movement good. After the session, the squad had lunch and made their way back to South London feeling well worked but ready for the coming season.

Neil Roberts, the charismatic Aussie head coach, was impressed with the facilities and said that it was a perfect few days to prepare for the new season. Impressively, KCS went on to win the annual Reigate Schools tournament on the following Saturday. During their 3 days in Loughborough, they had exclusive use of the Towers Rugby pitch, as good a quality rugby pitch as you will see. They also had use of rugby pads and equipment, kindly provided by Loughborough Students RFC. KCS also made use of the Olympic pool for a recovery session on the Thursday. The squad bonded very well, one of the key aims of the 3 day camp are keen to do a similar schedule next year, perhaps in Europe.
While KCS didn’t use the impressive Powerbase Gym, this facility is specifically designed to cater for athletes and has perfect weight training equipment for rugby teams. Powerbase has over 1000 m2 of facilities and is also used for recovery and rehabilitation.

Loughborough’s state of the art sports facilities, sporting expertise, and extensive accommodation make it an ideal pre season training camp choice for schools and serious amateur club sides. It's ideal for rugby and hockey groups but can be used for athletics, cricket, football and netball. Accommodation is on campus, with all buffet meals provided and served in the Linford Restaurant. The food is excellent and is prepared with elite athletes in mind, meeting nutritional requirements. Loughborough University is an official Pre-Games Training Camp for the London Olympic Games in 2012, reinforcing its status as one of the best venues for sport in the UK.
